Educational, vocational and personal guidance

Ballincollig Community School provides an all-embracing Guidance and Counselling service to all students. The school Guidance and Counselling service provides educational, vocational and personal guidance. Our school is incredibly fortunate to have three Guidance Counsellors on our staff. The Guidance and Counselling Department provide the services listed below:

  • Vocational Guidance

    The Guidance and Counselling service aids students in exploring their future vocational path. The Guidance department forge close links with all Junior Cycle classes. In Senior Cycle the Guidance department provides Guidance classes to students in fourth and sixth year. In Senior cycle:

    Students are made aware of the range of careers, courses and colleges available to them after secondary school.

    Assistance is provided to students in choosing a career path.

    In-depth information on Third level application procedures including CAO, UCAS, EUNICAS & FETAC are provided to all students.

    Visiting speakers & seminars are organised to inform students about courses & career options.

    Students are offered the opportunity attend career exhibitions & college Open Days.

    Individual appointments on future vocational paths are offered to all senior cycle students.

  • Educational Guidance

    Assistance to first years in their transition from primary school to Post Primary education.

    Advice to students on subject choice for the Junior Certificate and programmes to follow at senior cycle and on subject choice at senior cycle.

    Our students receive seminars, guidance & support on study skills, revision and exam techniques.

    Preparing students for the transition to further education, third level and the world of work.

    Parents/guardians are invited to attend information evenings on the transition from primary to secondary school, Junior Cycle subject choice & senior cycle options.

    Students are made aware of implications of changing levels.

  • Personal and Social Guidance

    The Guidance Department helps students to develop both personally and socially, while adhering to the Child Protection Procedures as outlined by TUSLA. This is achieved through classroom and individual contact. The Guidance Counsellor may:

    Offer individual counselling, providing a safe space and a professional approach to process issues and concerns.

    Liaise with management and staff regarding individual students and their families

    Address self- concept, family issues, adolescence, health, relationships and mental health difficulties.

    Facilitate referrals to outside support agencies and professional services
